THE ATMOSPHERE BACK on the road above Willow Falls had grown tense in the hours before dawn.

Since the truck had first stopped, four of the survivors of the 737 had begun to act unusually. Two had flat out refused to leave the back of the truck, despite the fact that the steel floor was sticky with Evan’s blood and the sharp coppery odor pervaded the warm air. Rather than climb down and enjoy the fresh air the two had pinned down the canvas cover and almost immediately fallen asleep in the comforting darkness.

The third, a pale young woman, had fallen to her knees in the long grass at the side of the road and had spent the last two hours staring silently into the middle distance. The chief had tried to drum up conversation with her twice in an attempt to take her mind off things, but both times he’d been met by a brick wall of silence. It wasn’t even clear that the woman could speak English.

The behavior of the three was a little worrying, but it was the final guy, Hal, who was keeping the chief’s heart rate up. Hal was a large man who had a couple of inches and maybe thirty pounds on the chief, and since the truck had pulled to a halt he’d become increasingly agitated. He’d refused to help Samantha and the chief bury Evan, and after the others had left to find Novak he’d only become more of a worry. He paced back and forth like a caged animal, biting his fingernails down to the quick and checking his watch compulsively. Samantha could see blood at the edges of his nails, but the man didn’t seem able to stop chewing on them.

The chief thought he knew what was happening, and it wasn’t good. “They’re all suffering psychological shock,” he said, resting on the tailgate of Joe’s truck and nursing a small bottle of water. “I’ve seen it a few times before, usually after bad car wrecks. Their minds don’t know how to process what’s happened. I mean, jeez, everything you guys have been through? A plane crash, a kidnapping and being forced to watch executions all in one day, on top of the fact that we’ve been invaded and hit by a damned EMP. I’ve only been through half of what you guys have suffered, and even I don’t know how I’m still standing.”

Samantha took a sip from her own water bottle. “So how come I’m… well, not quite OK, but how am I still thinking straight? I am thinking straight, aren’t I? How would I know?”

“Don’t worry, you seem OK to me.” The chief nodded to the grave by the side of the road. He’d lashed together two sticks with his belt to form a cross, and Samantha had wrapped the epaulettes from Evan’s captain’s shirt to the horizontal. “You had something to occupy your mind. I don’t want to make light of it, but digging that grave gave you the chance to take control of your situation.
